Neurological Disorders
An Introduction to Neurological Disorders
The immune and nervous systems have numerous interactions that impact on health and disease. The most well-known autoimmune neurological disorder is multiple sclerosis (MS), which is characterized by an inflammatory autoimmune attack on the myelin sheath and subsequent neurodegeneration. The immune system is also activated in other neurological disorders, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Huntington’s disease, chronic depression and schizophrenia. Treatments for MS include immunosuppression; immunomodulation ; leukocyte trafficking interference; and immune cell depletion. Further understanding of the balance between beneficial and pathological effects of the immune system on neuronal development will facilitate the development of novel therapies.
