Systemic lupus erythematosus is a chronic, heterogeneous, multisystem autoimmune disease characterised by severe fatigue and joint pain, and in many patients, involvement of the kidneys as lupus nephritis. Traditional treatment strategies have involved hydroxychloroquine, systemic glucocorticosteroids and conventional immunosuppressive drugs, but are associated with severe toxicities. Many current and emerging therapeutic strategies target B-cell-surface antigen, B-cell survival factors or B-cell intracellular signalling. However, many of these have disappointed in clinical trials, and there remains a need for new strategies. Novel therapies targeting interferons, cytokines and their receptors, intracellular signals, plasma cells, T lymphocytes and co-stimulatory molecules are also being investigated.

We spoke with Dr Janet Pope about a secondary analysis of the study, presented at EULAR 2026, investigating the treatment's effects on anti-dsDNA antibodies and complement proteins, and what these findings reveal about disease activity and potential clinical benefit.
Could personalized non-pharmacological care improve outcomes for people living with systemic lupus erythematosus and systemic sclerosis? In this interview from EULAR 2026, Dr Ioannis Parodis discusses the evidence underpinning EULAR recommendations and explores how patient education, psychosocial support and tailored lifestyle interventions can complement pharmacological treatment.
